Ward Allen, a noble duck hunter by trade, is a living legend. He has a close friendship with the freed slave Christmas Moultrie and his great love is Lucy Stubbs. This bubbly and headstrong young woman, however, refuses to marry the attractive and at the same time somewhat irascible Ward. Even though the Civil War is over, these are still turbulent times. At one point Ward finds himself forced to take on the government. He enters into a bitter struggle to continue his cherished way of life by the river - and not to lose the woman he loves.
